North Bridgeton Residence
North Bridgeton, ME
Located in the foothills of Maine’s western mountains, this house for a retired couple was inspired by the material strategies found in past local agricultural structures and remnant stone foundations. Horizontal board formed concrete foundations, clear sealed vertical red cedar siding and window frames, standing seam metal roofing and glass are the only materials to be used on the exterior of the structure. By limiting the material palette and adopting simple detailing strategies that relied on subtle changes to ‘off the shelf’ products the need for costly on site decision making was greatly reduced. The result was an overall construction cost that puts this house in the budget range of most starter homes.
