As part of their ongoing planning and development studies, Crosspoint Associates asked Utile to renovate the ground floor common space of their building in Boston’s Fort Point District. A previous conversion of the building from warehouse to office space left the main lobby crowded and under lit. The new design expresses the historic brick and beam construction, and provides dramatically improved lighting, seating, and accessibility for the building’s users and guests.

A simple material palette of polished concrete, blackened steel, and fiber-cement paneling serves to highlight and accentuate the warmth and character of the existing wood and masonry in the space. Utile also designed a series of custom graphic accent walls, which feature an abstracted historical image of the neighborhood from the Boston Public Library’s archives. The new space is an homage to the building’s history as part of the working waterfront, while at the same time providing a clean and fresh statement that reflects the dynamism of Boston’s growing Innovation District.
