A former industrial storage building in Chelsea was converted into the headquarters for Chelsea Neighborhood Developers (CND), a non-profit organization that is revitalizing Chelsea by funding mixed and affordable housing. The building is a mixed-use building with two levels of retail on the lower levels and CND offices on the third level. The challenge was to convert the windowless third floor into a light-filled and dynamic working environment. In addition to the renovation of the third floor, a lobby and vertical circulation core was added to the existing footprint to allow direct access to CND’s offices. The entire exterior of the building was re-cladded in a combination of galvanized corrugated metals to add depth to the facade and create a variety of textures and shadows.
