Utile, Inc. collaborated with Hecht Design on the layout and design of a temporary summer market on the Old Northern Avenue Bridge in Boston for the Boston Public Market Association. The design includes a custom graphic on standard awning tents and large-scale banners.
The tent and banner design capitalize on the loose and nomadic nature of this farmers’ market, triggered by the ongoing construction of the Big Dig. The asymmetric orange stripes on the individual tents create an overall “dazzle” pattern when the tents are seen in aggregate—a successful overlap between planning, architecture, and graphic design.
In addition to the design of the tents and banners, Utile facilitated the site selection process. Criteria for selection included the visibility to downtown office workers, adapting to the dynamics of the Big Dig construction schedule, and negotiating support of the neighboring property owners.
