In March 2003, Utile was selected as the urban design and design review consultant for Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport). The contract, which includes both design review and development guidelines development, has a renewable four-year term. Massport develops, manages, and promotes the airports, seaport, and some of the transportation infrastructure in greater Boston. In addition, Massport owns vast tracts of real estate surrounding Boston Harbor. Utile conducts the design review for all architecture, landscape architect, and urban design projects on Massport development parcels. As part of the process, Utile proposes alternative design ideas, through sketches, diagrams, and written comments to help guide the design process. Utile’s role is to balance the interests of individual property owners with the goal of creating a coherent and meaningful public realm.
