Martin’s Park is now open!

Utilians joined hundreds of supporters on Saturday at the Smith Family Waterfront for the unveiling of Boston’s new, inclusive park to honor the memory of Martin Richard. The park’s design was led by landscape architecture firm Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, Inc. (MVVA), in collaboration with the City of Boston Parks & Recreation Department, the Richard Family, Boston Children’s Museum, and the Smith Family Foundation. Utile supported the MVVA-led team with the design of a new covered parking structure for Boston Children’s Museum employees incorporated into the Sleeper Street border of the park.

In addition to being inclusive for visitors of all abilities, Martin’s Park is also designed to be resilient, in support of the City of Boston’s Resilient Boston Harbor vision to protect its shoreline during a major flooding event. Raising sections of the park, installing mini piles, and creating vegetation beds were measures taken to combat sea level rise on this parcel along Fort Point Channel. Earlier this month, the site was toured by former Vice President Joe Biden as he and Boston Mayor Martin Walsh discussed the City’s initiatives to prepare for climate change.

Utile is proud to be a part of this project as it helps bring peace to Boston’s past while transforming its future. Boston Globe reporter Jeremy Fox was on hand to cover the opening, which you can read about here.
