Roxbury Branch Library selected as a 2022 COTE Top Ten Award recipient

On this Earth Day, AIA’s Committee on the Environment (COTE) has announced the Roxbury Branch of the Boston Public Library Renovation as a 2022 recipient of the COTE Top Ten Awards, the industry’s best-known award program for sustainable design excellence! Each year, ten innovative projects are recognized for their integration of design excellence with environmental performance.

Utile’s renovation with the City of Boston Public Facilities Department and the Boston Public Library transforms one of the most energy-intensive branches in the Boston Public Library system to one of its most efficient with new windows, insulation, and roofing while preserving the exposed concrete structure of the 1970s design. Overall energy use is predicted to be 40% less than the pre-renovation design while expanding the library’s usable space by 20%. This reduced energy footprint comes with a dramatic increase in the comfort of the space with new radiant heating systems, abundant natural light, and sophisticated lighting controls.
