New Frontiers – Affordable Housing in the Suburbs

Michael and I visited this very smart 16 unit affordable housing project in suburban Wayland.  It was developed by FOU Kevin MaGuire and designed by Prellwitz Chilinski Associates in Cambridge.  The project was developed in partnership with the town (which donated the land) as a hedge against the threat of 40B developments.  Excellent features worth noting:

-Rural landscaping strategy, that includes a meadow layer mediating between the cut lawn and the woods. The absence of lawn directly abutting the woods, as well as a nice variety of native plant species, de-suburbanize the landscape.

-Unique entries to every unit, as well as small pieces of outdoor area specifically arranged for privacy.

-Ample outdoor storage areas for bicycles, kayaks and the like.

-Entry-level luxury unit interiors.
