Everett Square Streetscape Plan

Description

Utile worked with the City of Everett, MA on a new public realm design for Everett Square, the historic business district at the heart of this rapidly-changing city. The goal was to make the square a more vibrant, walkable destination, and to catalyze private investment.

The plan called for a larger, reconfigured open space, which would calm traffic and prioritize pedestrians. On Norwood Street, a parking diet will enable more generous sidewalks, encouraging sidewalk cafes and more active street life. The creation of a new street through a City-owned parking lot will simplify circulation and improve parking access.

In addition to addressing the public realm, Utile investigated options for bringing new mixed-use development to Everett Square. The team conducted development test-fits on several key parcels, and created a prospectus for the City to use in conversations with potential developers. Finally, Utile made recommendations to update the zoning to encourage mixed-use development and economic growth.

The re-envisioned public realm in Everett Square is slated for construction in FY2020.
