The Park School Connectivity Spaces

In alignment with the 2017 Master Plan, Utile identified a series of phased initiatives and enabling projects, completed over successive summer breaks. Between 2018 and 2025, Utile delivered six projects, including the Maker Wing & Woodshop, Early Childhood Wing Renovation, STEAM Classroom Suite, Upper Division Wing, Elevator Addition, and the conversion of academic support spaces and locker rooms.

One example of this phased strategy was the transformation of a deep, windowless section of the building – formerly underutilized locker rooms and a wrestling gym – into new academic space. This renovation became a priority in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, as the school needed larger classrooms to support safe, in-person learning.

With each enabling project, spaces were fully stripped back to its Brutalist concrete structure and reimagined. Utile designed a five-classroom suite and adjacent collaboration areas for Upper Division students. The original brick facade was replaced with floor-to-ceiling windows, offering expansive views of the Lars Anderson Park. The collaboration area is framed by lockers and custom millwork in warm white oak, accented by playful green tones that reference the Park School’s signature colors. Flexible, reconfigurable soft seating supports a wide range of group and individual activities within the open space.

At the core of the building, new restrooms, changing rooms and support spaces were added. The workout room was expanded and reoriented towards the adjacent gymnasium, with a large interior window enhancing natural light and connectivity to the fitness studio. In collaboration with Park School leadership, new multi-user restrooms and changing areas were designed to improve accessibility, supervision and equity across the Park School community.
