In an otherwise rectilinear enclosure we are designing for an electrical substation, there is a jog in plan that, because of it’s unexpectedness in such an otherwise rational proposal, demands an explanation. When the project designer explained the jog, he listed a several interrated and completely justifiable reasons, including the slightly tapering property line, the need to maximize space for equipment, etc. But while these reasons meant that the jog had to be there from a pragmatic standpoint, an architectonic rationale for the jog – as “explained” by subsequent design decisions that would inform the detail of the jog (in terms of joint, cladding, an additional functional attribute, etc.).
