Summit Coffee Roastery

Summit Roastery contains a coffee roastery alongside a cafe/ bakery and headquarters for Summit Coffee. Situated at the northwestern corner of a 60 acre site, the building represents the first phase of a mixed-use community and working farm outside of Davidson, North Carolina. Two volumes – an industrial-scale roastery and lower-slung bar of cafe, bakery, and offices – navigate the sloping site, shift to create outdoor spaces, and overlap to foster visual connections between levels. The interlocking gables that shelter these spaces both echo the region’s agricultural structures and strike a contemporary silhouette. The length of the western gable is broken by a shed dormer that accommodates a collaboration loft and offices overlooking the Cafe and Roastery below. These spaces in turn spill onto patios: an expansive Cafe Terrace with seating and play structures to the south and an intimate, shaded Cup Court to the north. An exterior palette of warm-but-weathered wood, corrugated metal roofs, and concrete continues the agrarian allusions while embodying guiding principles of practicality, durability, and rustic beauty.
