At Utile, we are deeply committed to both designing buildings that perform better for the planet and producing more of the housing our region needs. Too often those goals compete, since passive certification can require specialized expertise that not all projects have access to, and can be time-intensive during the design phase.

As part of Phius Con 2026 in Phoenix last week, Jeff Geisinger, our Director of Sustainable Design, and Darius, our Building Performance Specialist, together with DiAnne of PCA, asked: what if they didn’t have to compete? Drawing on an industry survey and the passive building portfolios of both Utile and PCA, their presentation, “What if… A Case for a Multifamily Prescriptive Path,” proposes a prescriptive route for low-rise, missing middle housing in places with few certified professionals, and a streamlined performance path for multifamily projects that saves time for designers and reviewers alike.

We very proud of the team for presenting a paper with intriguing possibilities for unlocking more sustainable homes in the future.
