We’re honored to share that the Boston Society of Architects has bestowed an Award of Commendation to the “Legalizing Mid-Rise Single-Stair Housing in Massachusetts” report in the 2025 Unbuilt Planning and Design category.

Led by Utile with funding from Boston Indicators and editorial advising from the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University, the study applies architectural thinking to building code reform and demonstrates how allowing single-stair buildings up to six stories could unlock more equitable, sustainable, and livable housing near transit with better access to light, air, and family-sized homes.
