Principal

About Nick:

Nick joined Utile in 2012 and leads the firm’s multifamily housing work for mission-driven organizations. As a Certified Passive House Consultant (CPHC), his expertise in building science, energy use, and Passive House design has also made him a leader in the firm’s commitment to sustainability. His contributions have been grounded in exposure to project types at all scales and for commercial, institutional, and non-profit clients.

As the lead on affordable housing projects at Utile, Nick has played a key role in over two dozen significant developments, fostering more equitable communities and furthering environmentally responsible building standards. During his tenure at Utile he has nurtured lasting relationships with local community development organizations, municipal stakeholders, general contractors, and design collaborators. His award-winning and recent projects include Front Street Affordable Housing (Portland ME), 25 Sixth St (Chelsea MA), and 1599 Columbus/Betty Greene Apartments (Jamaica Plain MA). Nick is currently overseeing the redevelopment of  Walnut High Apartments, a 181-unit multi-phase development for the Brookling Housing Authority.

Nick also plays an active role in the firm’s internal mentorship and professional development programs, advising on housing and construction best practices, QA/QC protocols, and operational management.

Trained as both an artist and an architect, Nick’s work prior to Utile took him to Colorado, California, and Rhode Island to engage on a variety of interdisciplinary, collaborative projects focusing primarily on ecological, social, and urban issues. Born and raised in Boston, Nick holds a BA in Studio Art from The Colorado College and an M.Arch. from Rhode Island School of Design. He has taught at the Boston Architectural College (BAC), and served as a guest critic at the BAC, Northeastern University and RISD.
