Utile Celebrates Black History Month with logo designed by Mykael Tucker

Graphically representing facts is the best way to inspire. As part of Utile’s ongoing Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Initiative, we are engaging with a diverse group of artists to design Utile logos that honor commemorative observance months throughout the year. For February’s Black History Month, Utile architectural designer, Mykael Tucker, created this inspiring logo.

Artist statement from Mykael Tucker: “This process was a learning opportunity for me. When I think about Black Leaders, I think about Dr. King, Malcolm X, Rosa Parks, etc.. Rarely do I ever hear about Ralph David Abernathy, or Stokely Carmichael. I chose a selection of Black figures that represent diversity within the Black culture. History has seen African Americans, Afro-Latinx, and Caribbean born leaders push to make change in the US. I realized that it is important to start somewhere we are familiar with when doing research. There are hundreds if not thousands of leaders who fought for the rights of others and it is important that we get familiar with them. They weren’t willing to compromise their values and beliefs no matter what dangers lay in front of them. I am inspired by their work because they weren’t concerned about being judged, harassed, or killed for what they believe in.”

Thank you Mykael for the incredible logo and for sharing your thoughts behind it. We are proud to showcase your talents and are grateful for your contributions as a Utilian!
